UNIMATIC's Modello Uno U1-MI Is a Milan-Only Tribute to 12 Cult Collaborations

UNIMATIC has never reissued a sold-out watch — a policy that's turned pieces like the brand's Hodinkee and NASA collaborations into some of the hardest tickets in microbrand collecting. With the new Modello Uno ref. U1-MI, the Italian brand found a workaround: instead of bringing back any single collaboration, it's folded design elements from twelve of them into one entirely new watch, sold exclusively at its Milan flagship.

A Brand Built on Not Looking Back

Founded in Milan in 2015 by Giovanni Moro and Simone Nunziato, two industrial designers who met at the Politecnico di Milano, UNIMATIC built its reputation on a simple, almost stubborn formula: a handful of case shapes, made in Italy, sold in small runs that are never repeated. That scarcity is the whole engine behind the U1-MI. A brand that refuses to bring anything back has to find another way to celebrate its own history, and distilling twelve collaborations into one new watch is UNIMATIC's answer.

A Dial Built From Twelve Collaborations

The concept is the whole story here. Rather than a straight re-edition, the U1-MI's dial is split into twelve sectors, each one referencing a specific past collaboration — a blue quarter nodding to the 2019 Mr Porter edition, a green segment pulling from the 2021 VELOCE LIFE x UNIMATIC release, an orange accent tracing back to the WOAW Hong Kong piece, and so on around the dial. UNIMATIC is framing it less as nostalgia and more as a puzzle for people who already know the back catalog — recognizable at a glance to collectors, abstract and graphic to everyone else.

The twelve references span a wide range of UNIMATIC's collaborative history: fashion and retail partners like Mr Porter, LuisaViaRoma, WOAW Hong Kong, and Colette; design studios and media brands like Massena Lab and Hodinkee; institutional tie-ins with NASA and the Museum of Modern Art; a regional exclusive made for collectors across the Arabic world; and one unapologetically pop-culture entry starring SpongeBob SquarePants. It's a genuinely broad cross-section of who has wanted a piece of UNIMATIC over the past decade.

The twelve references pulled into the design:

That last one matters: Colette was UNIMATIC's debut partnership, released the year the Parisian concept store closed for good. It's a fitting anchor for a watch built to survey everything that's come since — and a reminder that UNIMATIC's collaboration strategy was there from almost the very beginning, not something bolted on once the brand got popular.

The Case Behind the UNIMATIC Modello Uno U1-MI Concept

Strip away the collaboration references and the UNIMATIC Modello Uno U1-MI is still a proper UNIMATIC dive watch. It's built in brushed 316L stainless steel, 41.5mm across with the bezel and 49mm lug-to-lug — UNIMATIC's familiar, compact-for-a-diver proportions. A 120-click unidirectional bezel with a matte black aluminum insert sits under a double-domed sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, and the brand's 8mm "Alchemical Sun" crown screws down to help back a water resistance individually tested to 300 meters.

The detail UNIMATIC clearly built the whole watch around, though, is the caseback: a dedicated, screw-down Anniversary caseback, acid-etched with a sector design that mirrors the dial — one sector for each of the twelve collaborations referenced up front. It's the kind of detail that rewards actually taking the watch off your wrist.

At €675 (ex. VAT) — roughly $775 at current exchange rates — the U1-MI actually lands toward the lower end of what UNIMATIC has charged for its more elaborate collaborations, several of which have cleared $1,000 once retail markups and limited-run premiums are factored in. For a brand whose core lineup already competes well within the broader microbrand dive watch category, that pricing keeps the U1-MI accessible relative to its concept, even with the added friction of an in-person-only release.

Milan-Only, and Only for One Night

UNIMATIC is tying the U1-MI as much to its home city as to its back catalog. The watch launches at a dedicated event at Museo Bagatti Valsecchi, a 19th-century historic house museum in Milan's fashion district, on September 29th at 6:30 PM CEST. From there it will be sold exclusively through the UNIMATIC flagship store at Via Meravigli 18 — no online release, no other retail partners. Pricing is set at €675 (ex. VAT).

There's no stated edition size in the release, which — combined with in-store-only distribution in a single city — makes this one of the more genuinely hard-to-get UNIMATIC releases of the year, collaboration watch or not. Anyone outside Milan hoping to add the U1-MI to a collection will likely be depending on the secondary market or a friend on the ground come September 29th.

For a brand whose whole identity rests on scarcity, the U1-MI is a clever piece of self-referential design — a watch that's essentially a highlight reel of the collaborations that made UNIMATIC's collaborations worth chasing in the first place. Whether it becomes its own future grail probably depends on just how few of these actually leave that Milan storefront.

Until next time.
